Steelseries H Wireless review
Gamers nowadays play a variety of games on various platforms: some on the PC, others on Mac, and there are those that prefer the consoles. However, for the gamers that live their gaming life to the fullest, those who dive into games in various consoles, getting the right gaming headset could be an ordeal. Having to switch to between PC or Mac and consoles with one gaming headset could be impossible – but all that could change with the Steelseries H Wireless Gaming Headset.
We have here a Headset which boasts great audio while maintaining its stylish aesthetic. Gamers needn’t worry about sound interference and lags as its audio stream is consistent and smooth. The Steelserie’s Headset also features Dolby technologies, namely Dolby Headphones, Dolby Digital, and Dolby Pro Logic which can be used to immerse yourself in 7.1 soundscape.
One of the main selling points of the Steelseries H Wireless Gaming Headset is that it can work across different platforms: PC, Mac, Playstation 3, Playstation 4, and Xbox 360. In addition, the headset also features a Sound Share port, allowing your friend to join in on the auditory experience.
On the headsets ear cups you can control a range of functions: the control wheel adjusts volume and can be used to navigate through the different options on the audio transmitter. The Headset has two 20-hour swappable batteries, one for the headset and one safely stored or charging in the audio transmitter.
Specially made for gamers, the Steelseries H Wireless Gaming Headset features a technology which turns up chat volume while turning down game audio when voice communication is detected. Through this technology, LiveMix which automates ChatMix, you can also control the audio level balance between in game sounds and conversations.
Meanwhile, the Gaming Headset’s audio transmitter, which has OLED display, shows the audio sources, battery life, profiles, and volume. Its OLED display makes it easy to see and operate it from a comfortable distance using the headset.
Gamers are very particular with the sound of their games and with these headphones you may still need to make some adjustments to achieve the desired sound as some sound effects may be muted or may get lost among the various sounds. This is where the wireless control for the audio transmitter will come in handy as you may need to go through the various options so as to get the sound that you are looking for. When it comes to the headset’s volume, even on the maximum volume setting on the headset, the sound power can still be a bit lacking.
When Dolby surround sound is used though, the audio experience definitely broadens up the sound. Using Dolby surround sound will definitely improve your gaming experience as it will offer you a sense of direction as to where the sound came from, and a better feel for your surroundings. However, even when Dolby surround sound is used, some sounds can still get muted.
Headset, Mic, Audio Transmitter, and Warranty
The Steelseries H Wireless Gaming Headset is pretty light weight compared to other gaming headsets. The padding on the ear cups are superb as they really comfortable to the ears. However, the same comfort cannot be said with the headset’s headband as it is really snug on the head to the point of almost tight. This tightness can get uncomfortable especially when you intend to wear the headset for a long duration. The snug feel does go away after weeks of using it. Another thing of note about the headband is that its padding could need a little more widening, especially for the gamers that are looking for a really comfortable feel.
What it lacks in comfort, it makes up for its functionality. The Steelseries H Wireless really does allow you to stay on your couch while still giving you full control of all the features such as power for the headset and the microphone, volume control, and navigating through the different settings on the audio transmitter.
You will also never have to worry about losing power as this headset comes with two batteries: one of which will be used to power the headset, while the other is safely stored or charging in the audio transmitter.
The Steelseries Headset’s microphone is surprisingly retractable and flexible, able to bend so as to follow the contour of the face. But the microphone can still use a bit of improvement as there are still some noises that can accompany your conversations.
As for the audio transmitter, its compact and stylish design will blend seamlessly into your home as it does not take much space. There are a variety of ports which can be found at the back of the device which allows for cross-platform use. In line with cross-platform use, It does come with a variety of power adapters and cables.
Gamers might get disappointed with Steelseries H headphone’s warranty though as the company only gives United States a year of limited warranty which only covers manufacturing defects (two years for Europe, one year for Asia), and does not cover wear and tear, breakage, and that sort.
Is it Worth Your Money ?
For the price tag of $300, it will be quite difficult for gamers to run to the store and get the Steelseries H Wireless Gaming Headset. Its sound quality, though good, could still use some improvements; its microphone, though low profile, does suffer from receiving ambient noise, however it is good for communicating; and its headband may need some getting used to as it is really snug. Another issue the potential buyers of the Steelseries may face is its limited warranty as others are looking for more security when it comes to their gaming headsets.
But this great Headset does have its pluses: the fact that it is wireless really helps out; the two rechargeable batteries are very much appreciated; and probably the best feature – its cross-platform capability. The price tag is certainly heavy for a gaming headset such as the Steelseries H Wireless Gaming Headset, but if you are the gamer that is looking for a gaming headset that can be used across different platforms, then it could be the one for you.
